What are the care and safety arrangements?

Children are supervised at all times by their teachers.
A Before School Club (starting at 08:00) and an After School Club (that runs until 18:00) provide additional services to parents. Security for our spacious site includes CCTV and code locks on gates.
Health & Safety policies and procedures are in place throughout the School while our Form Teachers are directly responsible for the welfare and care of the children in their forms.

What is the Nursery Curriculum?

The Nursery Curriculum is designed to encourage the development of the whole child and aid in the creation of a solid foundation for the growth of a happy and successful pupil. Emphasis is placed on enhancing skills, knowledge and understanding in aspects such as mathematics, language and literacy, emotional & social development, knowledge of the world, physical development and creativity.

How are children taught in the junior forms?

In the junior forms, children are taught mostly by their form teachers with the help of classroom assistants, in mixed ability groups.

How are children taught in the senior forms?

As pupils move up the school, subject specialists teach children on a subject basis. Setting in some subjects, according to achievement, is also introduced at the top of the school for some year groups. This arrangement further enhances the individual attention that Long Close children enjoy.

What teaching methods are used?

Members of staff endeavour to combine the best of traditional teaching methods with modern educational ideas.

Do you cater for special needs?

Yes, we have a dedicated in class support teacher.

What are the links between staff and parents?

Close links between parents and the School are encouraged through easy access to staff in addition to the more formal arrangements that include parent consultations, reports and daily contact books. Every child's progress is carefully monitored throughout the year and communicated to parents via meetings, reports, grade cards, tests and examinations.

Does the school have a Parents' Association?

A committed Parents' Association, FOLCS, promotes fun and friendship amongst Long Close families. Their activities include fairs, family days and evening occasions such as the Summer Ball.

What is the religious ethos of the School?

We aim to develop spiritual and moral awareness with the emphasis on making the right choices in life. The Christian Calendar is celebrated and the five main religions of the world are explored in religious studies. Harvest Festival and a Christmas Carol Service are celebrated in a local church.

Do children use computers at the School?

Computers are used across the curriculum in classrooms and laboratories, while Information and Communication Technology is taught in the Schools dedicated computer suite with internet access.

What about Music and Drama?

Besides the class music and drama lessons, pupils may learn a musical instrument and are encouraged to participate in the various performing groups and theatrical productions. Children gain great confidence by performing drama productions and musical recitals to the school in assemblies and to parents in concerts.

What sport and club activities are arranged?

There is an extensive range of clubs and activities at Long Close in addition to the traditional team games such as netball & rounders; cricket, rugby & football; swimming, tennis and athletics.

What is the provision for Art & Design?

All the children participate in art and craft activities in addition to the ever-increasing role that the Design & Technology department plays in their lives. The pupils enjoy the specialist art room and design & technology room that helps to develop their powers of observation, technical and presentation skills, problem solving abilities and creativity.

What is the discipline like at Long Close?

We have high expectations of all at the School and this includes the behaviour, dress and manners of our children. The staff will intervene to correct inappropriate behaviour, but we have a happy school that seeks to reward and praise its children for their friendly and caring attitude to others.
