CHARITY UPDATE - 25th November, 2011
Children in Need - on Friday 18th November, pupils and teachers at Long Close School purchased hot chocolate, cupcakes and muffins during morning break. Many generous parents and students made donations towards the charity event held on that day. So far, we have managed to raise £225 in aid of Children in Need and we look forward to increasing that total by taking half the proceedings from the tombola stall in the school Christmas Fayre.
Also, a BIG thank you for all donations towards the 2011 Poppy Appeal. Each year the Royal British Legion raises money through the Poppy Appeal emphasising the need to help all generations of the Armed Forces and their families - today and for the rest of their lives.
“On behalf of Long Close School - I would like to thank all students and parents for being so generous and thoughtful by contributing towards helping less fortunate children around the world and in the U.K. “ – Miss A Ramadhan

Charity Fun Run
Long Close School were involved with a week of running for Charity during early September. Years 3 and 4 ran their mile. The next day years 5 and 6 ran their 1½ miles alongside years 7, 8 and 9 running their 2 miles. The following Monday involved the senior part of the school where 3 miles was run by years 10 and 11. All days were kind to the runners in terms of the weather. Although it was not warm the sun was kindly shining down. In the distance small dots could be seen like little ants moving in a meandering path. It was evident that there were strong runners. The aerobic capacity of Shiv Talla (year 11), Matthew Morris (year 9) and Kristin Walker (year 4) provided some outstanding results, all breaking their age group school records. They all have promising futures.
The Cross Country was not just about being the best or winning gold medals. The point was to establish what Long Close School can do for others. Everyone that participated embraced the event and ran to support the school and charity. Long Close is very well aware how others can benefit, as they are an ambassador for collecting for various charities throughout each year. Parents, friends and pupils all contributed to a very successful £680 for charity and Long Close would like to extend their appreciation of their donations.
Joanna Patching kindly came into school on Friday 12th November to accept the donation on behalf of Cancer Research UK.

Local children treat the elderly to a healthy tea
BUDDING young chefs at Long Close School, in Upton Court Road, Slough celebrated National School Meals Week by putting their culinary skills to the test for the Langley Luncheon Club.
The youngsters prepared and delivered a healthy tea to members of the Age Concern group to take home after their luncheon club get-together this Tuesday (9th).
Sarah Page, a representative of Langley Luncheon Club said:
“It is lovely to see young people maintaining continuity and doing something for older people in the community. It was apparent by the way they spoke to people here that they were very happy to be involved."
On the menu were fresh chicken fillet salad sandwiches and salmon & cucumber sandwiches, both on brown bread, followed by fresh fruit salad and Greek yoghurt for dessert.
The menu, which was based on food that the children like to eat at school, was personally designed, cooked and prepared by pupils with the help of school chef, Gill Kauppila.
With the emphasis on using fresh, healthy ingredients, it was hoped that not only would the luncheon club members receive a satisfying tea but pupils from the school would also learn about the importance of healthy eating.
David Brazier, Head Teacher of Long Close School said:
"Long Close is keen to reach out to the local community and we are particularly concerned with the elderly population of Slough who are often forgotten and lonely. We want to engage with them and draw upon their experience and wisdom."
Long Close School has an established relationship with the Langley Luncheon Club, where pupils are regularly involved in events for the members.
Children share festival cheer
LOCAL children celebrated Harvest Festival by delivering boxes of food to the elderly and homeless.
Big-hearted pupils from Long Close School, in Slough, made donations to Age Concern in Slough, Slough Homeless Our Concern, and Age Concern at the Langley Luncheon Club. The Harvest boxes were on display at the Junior and Senior Harvest Festival Assemblies at the school, in Upton Court Road, where more than 200 parents joined their children in a celebration of singing, reflection, and thanksgiving. The boxes were designed by pupils of all ages with help from their families at home. The older students in Year 11 produced a joint effort. The Harvest boxes were delivered to the charities on Wednesday 20th October by staff and two pupils - seven-year-old Ashley Hallett, in Year Three, and his brother, four-year-old Nathan Hallett, from the Reception Class.
Headmaster David Brazier said: “The boxes were all beautifully designed with a harvest theme. It was heart-warming to see pupils, young and old, celebrate harvest together with such spirit and enthusiasm and to give so generously to such deserving charities.” The school has close ties with Age Concern and puts on several events throughout the year to support the charity, the next one being a carol singing concert at Christmas.
The two pupils presenting the boxes to Age Concern at the Langley Luncheon Club were also lucky enough to meet the Mayor of Slough, Jagjit Grewal, who was present to attend the special forum for elderly residents, where the Harvest boxes were to be raffled off as prizes.

"I would like to thank you all for your generous contribution to "Children In Need" last Friday. We raised a total of £525. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the activities and weren't disheartened by the wet weather. Once again, thank you very much for all your support on Friday.
