Sport at Long Close
During their time at Long Close, our children enjoy regular PE, games and swimming lessons as part of their weekly timetable. Along the way, they learn to play sports such as rugby, football, cricket, hockey, netball, gymnastics, athletics and rounders, discovering the values of teamwork, discipline and practice, while experiencing the exhilaration and fulfilment of well-marshalled competition.
We are fortunate to have two excellent Astro-turf pitches, cricket nets, a bowling machine and a long-jump pit within the school grounds, and plenty of surrounding parkland for games such as rugby and rounders.
Learning to swim is a skill that we believe is important for every child. Pupils at Long Close enjoy off-site, weekly lessons from Reception upwards.
Rowing at Dorney Lake
Year 9 and 10 pupils enjoy access to Dorney Lake for indoor and outdoor rowing.
Children really enjoy their residential visits to the Bushcraft Company where they experience real back-to-nature activities.
We enjoy a whole school sports day at TVAC in Eton – bringing the sporting calendar to an exciting finish each summer.
Health and fitness
The health and fitness of our pupils supported with regular physical activity sessions. Our senior pupils also benefit from access to rowing machines and other fitness equipment, enabling them to improve cardiovascular fitness and strength.
All year groups participate in activities to improve fitness levels as well as curriculum time for gymnastics, which is excellent for building strength, flexibility and tone.
Our pupils have the opportunity to participate in a mix of individual activity and team sports, cultivating a sense of both personal and team achievements.
We have a busy list of sports fixtures with other schools, and pride ourselves our good performance and the pupils’ sporting behaviour before, during and after fixtures.
Our football and cricket teams have enjoyed great success against other local schools. We also feel it is important that every pupil is offered the opportunity to represent the school in sport, so we have competitive matches to suit different ability levels.
Our sporting endeavours are a source of great pride to the school, and we take particular pleasure when our pupils achieve further outside success. A number of our pupils have recently represented Berkshire Cricket at Under 11 level and enjoyed playing cricket at County level.
Long Close school also has links to Slough Hockey Club for Girls Hockey.
All of this is possible thanks to a team of specialist sports teachers who work with all of our pupils – from the oldest to the youngest. We believe this blanket commitment to quality is one of the key benefits of our status as an all-through school.
Long Close’s location, on the outskirts of Slough, means it also benefits from the use of vast open spaces that surround the campus. These are used rugby, football, cricket and rounders. We also have two Astro-turf courts on site which are used for tennis, netball, hockey and 5-a-side football.
Pupils also have access to Sport Leader training, including Young Ambassadors and also Badminton Leaders awards.
