During their time at Long Close our children enjoy regular PE and games as part of their weekly timetable. Along the way they learn to play many sports – rugby, football, cricket, hockey, netball, rounders and basketball – discovering the values of teamwork, discipline and practice. In PE lessons, pupils are given opportunities to participate in athletics, gymnastics and fitness-related activities. The skills we learn from the youngest age groups are built on and developed each year.

We are fortunate to have two excellent astro-turf pitches, cricket nets, a bowling machine and a long-jump pit within the school grounds, and plenty of surrounding parkland for games such as rugby, football, cricket and rounders. We are always looking to expand our sporting programme and, through links with the Slough Sports Partnership, are able to participate in a wide variety of different sports including rowing.

We have a busy list of sports fixtures and regularly compete against other local schools in football, rugby, cricket, hockey, netball and rounders. We often host tournaments and are proud of the links we create with surrounding schools. In the cricket season, we regularly participate in county competitions and have enjoyed much success over the years.

Our sporting endeavours are a source of great pride to the school, and we take particular pleasure when our pupils achieve further success. Several pupils play cricket at county level and we also have some very promising young footballers who are associated with local football league clubs.

All of this is possible thanks to our specialist sports teachers who work with all of our pupils from Nursery to Year 11.

We are fortunate to have two excellent astro-turf pitches, cricket nets, a bowling machine and a long-jump pit within the school grounds, and plenty of surrounding parkland for games such as rugby and rounders. We are always looking to expand our sporting programme, enjoying access to local swimming pools and recently arranging to use the indoor rowing machines at Langley Leisure Centre. Our Year 6 pupils also take part in a five-day adventure training residential trip – a highlight of their school experience.

We have a busy list of sports fixtures with other schools, and are considered one of the best cricketing schools in Berkshire. In the last six years, we have won two county cups (U11 and U12), and reached the final, semi-final and quarter-final on three other occasions. We have also branched out to win the Slough U9 ‘Biff and Bash’ softball competition and the U11 Holland Cup 10/10 Power Play.

Our sporting endeavours are a source of great pride to the school, and we take particular pleasure when our pupils achieve further outside success. Seven of our pupils, for example, play cricket at county level, and one recently won a sporting scholarship to Millfield Prep.

All of this is possible thanks to our specialist sports teachers who work with all of our pupils – from the oldest to the youngest. We believe this blanket commitment to quality is one of the key benefits of our status as an all-through school.
