Sport

During their time at Long Close our children enjoy regular PE, games and swimming lessons as part of their weekly timetable. Along the way they learn to play sports such as rugby, football, cricket, hockey, netball, athletics, rounders and basketball, discovering the values of teamwork, discipline and practice, and experiencing the exhilaration and fulfilment of well-marshalled competition.

We are fortunate to have two excellent astro-turf pitches, cricket nets, a bowling machine and a long-jump pit within the school grounds, and plenty of surrounding parkland for games such as rugby and rounders. We are always looking to expand our sporting programme, enjoying access to local swimming pools and recently arranging to use the indoor rowing machines at Langley Leisure Centre. Our Year 6 pupils also take part in a five-day adventure training residential trip – a highlight of their school experience.

We have a busy list of sports fixtures with other schools, and are considered one of the best cricketing schools in Berkshire. In the last six years, we have won two county cups (U11 and U12), and reached the final, semi-final and quarter-final on three other occasions. We have also branched out to win the Slough U9 ‘Biff and Bash’ softball competition and the U11 Holland Cup 10/10 Power Play.

Our sporting endeavours are a source of great pride to the school, and we take particular pleasure when our pupils achieve further outside success. Seven of our pupils, for example, play cricket at county level, and one recently won a sporting scholarship to Millfield Prep.

All of this is possible thanks to our specialist sports teachers who work with all of our pupils – from the oldest to the youngest. We believe this blanket commitment to quality is one of the key benefits of our status as an all-through school.
