Learning Support

Long Close welcome students of different abilities and aptitudes. Before they join, we assess all of our starters to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses, enabling us to individualised learning support.

We take great care to keep track of every one of our pupils as they progress through the school, preparing an Individual Education Plan for each one and constantly updating it in consultation with parents. That way, we are confident that we can identify and deal with any educational needs as they arise.

Long Close School aims to make appropriate provision for children recognised within the following broad areas of SEN:

Communication and interaction

Cognition and learning

Support Structure

The learning support team communicates closely with subject teachers, recognising and addressing pupils’ needs as quickly as possible. Students with Special Educational Needs are taught within the normal mainstream classes. All pupils identified as SEN are treated equally and given access to an appropriate curriculum.

Specific Difficulties

The goal of the department is to help pupils with Dyslexia and related difficulties, including Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and other identified difficulties. Our aim is to help students realise their full potential, gain the most from the curriculum and achieve success in their examinations.

EAL

Our primary aim with students who have English as a foreign or additional language is to help them acquire the English skills they need to participate in learning activities on an equal basis with their peers, and to meet the expectations of the year level curriculum. EAL students build English language awareness through reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Assessment

Should a student be identified after entry as requiring additional support they will be observed, and their data will be analysed. If it is then felt necessary, they will be added to the SEN register. When necessary, the department will recommend that an Education Psychologist report is commissioned to provide more in-depth detail about a pupil. We recommend a named specialist teacher, associated to the school, to complete access arrangement assessments for the required evidence at GCSE Level.

To discuss your child’s individual needs, please contact our Admissions Registrar, Jane Gee, by emailing admissions@longcloseschool.co.uk or calling 01753 520095.

Year 11 - Supporting Transition to Further Education

As students progress through Long Close School they develop an aptitude for success both personally and academically. This character trait provides the perfect foundation for the next stage of their education. Armed with outstanding academic success, our students enjoy pathways into their chosen destinations. Part of this preparation is equipping them with the correct advice and information to help them make the right choice.
