Teacher Spotlight – Mr Tanton, Head of Prep
What were your first impressions of Long Close School and why did you want to teach here?
When I first visited the school, I was struck by how friendly and welcoming the children were. From that moment, I said to myself “Long Close is somewhere I want to be and feel I can make a difference.”
What did you do before Long Close School?
Before I Joined Long Close, I led all the teaching and learning at a large school in Surrey. I was also lucky enough to be part of a partnership that visited other schools to Quality Assure judgments about teaching and learning.
What is your best memory from your school days?
I really enjoyed all my school days as a child. Living and growing up in rural North Devon, I particularly remember my first trip to London, which was a school trip to Twickenham to see the annual varsity match between Oxford and Cambridge: Oxford won.
If you could grow up in any decade, which one would you choose and why?
As a historian I don’t really look at any decade with rose tinted spectacles. However, I think that growing up in the 1980s like I did was great! I remember just being outside with my friends for hours and hours on end, although the music could have been better!
What is your all-time favourite movie and why?
This is a very difficult question. If I must just choose one, it is probably “A Wonderful Life” starring James Stewart. It is a great story about the impact one man has on his community by being a good person.
If you could pass one piece of wisdom to your students, what would you share?
Take every opportunity you can; don’t be afraid to try something new.
Is there a quote or saying you live your life by?
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
Any fun facts we might not know about you?
I took dance lessons before I got married for the first dance.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
Spending time out and about with my wife and children is my favourite way to enjoy time away from work closely followed by watching Rugby now that I do not play anymore.
