As children progress through Prep School, we ensure they are taught curriculum that prepares them for the requirements of both Independent and State Grammar School entrance examinations. In addition to teaching from the key elements of the National Curriculum, we embed the 11+ Curriculum from Year 1.
How we Embed the 11+ Curriculum
Below is a breakdown of how we embed the 11+ curriculum from Year 1. For a more detailed breakdown by year, please download the booklet below. If you would like to meet Mr Tanton our Head of Prep to discuss this in more detail, please email email@example.com.
Year 1 & 2
To support children with their Verbal Reasoning (VR) in Key Stage 1, we play word games and quizzes. For example: spotting the odd one out from a list of words, giving a synonym or antonym for a word and solving anagrams. For Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR), we begin to identify and explore similarities and differences related to shape and pattern with targeted questioning. As well as embedding these skills into our curriculum, we also have a weekly lesson focusing on these areas.
Year 3 & 4
As there are many different questions within Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, we begin to introduce the specific types of questions pupils will encounter in Lower Key Stage 2. This can involve developing dictionary and thesaurus skills, crosswords, word searches and sudoku, as well as formal teaching. We also introduce BOFA which is our online learning platform that children use at home.
rom Year 5, we offer additional support by running an after-school club specifically for the Eleven Plus examinations (free of charge). In the classroom we continue to develop children’s techniques and skills focusing on test papers which cover a wide range of common entrance exams, including Buckingham and Berkshire. When we know which school the children are aiming to transition to we tailor our preparation accordingly.
As children start Year 6, we continue supporting them right up until their examinations. For this, we run additional clubs specifically for Year 6. We give children the opportunity to experience mock tests and coach them on how to best prepare for the upcoming examination. As a school, we are a centre for the Buckinghamshire tests so all children taking part will have the familiarity of sitting this test within their School setting.
